FORUMS

Q.Do I need a mainville.org account to read or post to the forums?
A.No. Anyone can read the mainville.org forums and anyone can post messages to the mainville.org forums.

If it turns out, however, that there are inappropriate posts in the forums then the forums will be changed so that you either need to have a mainville.org account to post or they will become moderated.

Q.Is my email address visible when I post a message to the forums?
A.By default, yes. Anyone reading the forums will know your email address. But there are a couple of things you can do at mainville.org to protect your email address and prevent SPAM.

One is to ensure you are using a 'mangled' email address when posting to the forums. This makes it more difficult for your email address to be harvested by the automated tools used by some unscrupulous web users. The 'mangle' option will help prevent SPAM and is a default mainville.org setting. A human would recognize that your email address was mangled and would still be able to respond to your forum posts via email. Once you are logged in to mainville.org, you can select the mangle option in 'my account' -> 'preferences'.

Another way to protect your email address is to simply not use an email address when posting to the forums; you are not required to do so. Other readers of the forums will not be able to email their responses directly to you, though (but can still post responses to your forum messages).
